Chimney Heap

The year is 1985. The setting is the historic Riverboat Gift Shop in Natchez, Mississippi. Our hero is 27-year-old thief Calvin Wilson. Calvin crawls onto the roof of the gift shop, and, like an evil Santa, descends down the chimney in order to rob the joint.

Fast-forward fifteen years to January 24, 2001. A crew of masons renovating the gift shop come across the fully-clothed skeletal remains of our poor hero. It seems that Calvin dove head-first into the chimney, injured himself, and was unable to call for help.

Adams County Sheriff Tommy Ferrell, who said police identified the remains from a wallet found with them, speculated that breezes from a nearby river may have kept neighbors from noticing signs that a body was decomposing in the chimney. "There is no suspicion of foul play," Ferrell said. He then added matter-of-factly, "His criminal record shows he was a burglar, so the suspicion is that he was crawling down the chimney to burglarize the business at that period of time, became lodged and died."
